Today was day 2 of the Salmon Days festival, which also meant that today was the race! It was this one.
Phoebe had joined the running club at school with the notion that running would help her be ready for basketball season. After only one group run, she decided she loved it and wanted to do a race. This one was coming up very quickly (and it was fairly close), in fact the last day of online registration was the first day of running club!
I chose the Kid’s Dash 1K for her for this first outing. Several reason led to that. First, she only ran one mile on Thursday and hadn’t been running distance prior to that. Second, we wouldn’t be able to see much of the course at all for the 5K (and let’s not even talk about the 10K).

She LOVED it! It was fast and over too quickly as far as she was concerned and she wanted to run it again, right then. Personally, I am so proud of her for even trying it out and I love that she loved it and was so happy. At the end, she received dog tags indicating she was a race finisher.

Oh, and let’s not forget the race shirt! She wore it to school the next day which made me glad that she kept with the bright pink–it made it so easy to spot her in the crowd!
She now has her eye set on the 5K next year. That’s a long way off, but if she really does like this whole “running thing” long term, it’ll be easy and a blast for her (and us)!

It’s Salmon Days here! All weekend, in fact. It is the annual celebration of returning salmon to the lakes, streams and downtown hatchery* (yes, there is a salmon hatchery in town!) with all sorts of free and fun activities. There are vendors with everything from food to art to textiles and everything in between. We saw a nifty one selling little frogs in their own little aquarium habitats. There was fruit on a stick. There were those awesome hammock style swing/chairs. Music stages and a whole field of fun (which we didn’t do this year either). Being our second year was nice since we had a clue about the whole thing (but only a clue).
Ray, Phoebe and I spent a few hours this morning at the festival while Alex was attending a class. We wandered around (in the chilly drizzle) and browsed many of the booths while most of the festival goers were further away watching the parade. Since neither child was actually in the parade this year, we opted to not watch it either. I have to say that it was nice, although having a little more time would have been nice too. This year we parked outside of town and rode the shuttle in — so much better than finding ill-placed parking and walking a long, long way (and then back too).
The afternoon had Alex in one direction and Phoebe in another, so we split up for the rest of the day.

It always seems peculiar to me when time seems to have flown by, yet also seems like it is creeping along. Such an odd thing to have such polar opposite feelings simultaneously.
So here it is, October 1st. Already. The first month of school has passed. Fall seems to be here.
My absence from here for September meant there was not really an acknowledgement of many things: the anniversary of this blog, my brother’s birthday, a real post about my wedding anniversary, and many of the kids’ events and happenings. I’m hoping that now that we have a more established schedule (more established, not completely established) that I will be able to update regularly here. Probably not daily, though that is my goal. There are just some days where there is nothing to say.
Cheers!
