Do-Re-Me!!!

June 23, 2010 By: Kini Category: Kids, Misc., School Comments Off

The big news for today is that Alex has started voice lessons with a most fabulous lady! I am so excited to see, well, hear what she does with Alex over the summer!

Afterwards, we girls went to the bank, had a late lunch, stopped at the fabric/craft store and headed home.

Exciting, right?

School’s Out for Summer!

The girls both had half days of school today and yesterday. Alex had final exams. Phoebe didn’t. It’s the difference between high school and first grade.

School is officially out for summer!

Field Trip Day

May 28, 2010 By: Kini Category: Kids, Misc., Photos, School Comments Off

Today, I chaperoned Phoebe’s class field trip to one of the nearby nature centers. The bus was VERY loud, but I suppose it could have been much louder or very rowdy. (These were first graders, after all.)

Once the bus arrived at the nature center, the two classes split up. Our class did the inside presentation first before hiking to the pond for the pond study portion (the other class did the opposite).

The kids were giddy when our guide brought out a turtle and let it run around within the seated circle of kids. I’m not sure they heard anything she said at that point.

Out at the pond, the kids were given nets and our smaller groups split up between the several docks. Their mission was to scoop into the pond with the nets and see what pond life they managed to capture. Everything was put into pans of water so that everyone could see them.

Once the scooping was done, the groups looked at each pan in turn while our guide pointed out nifty things to them. It’s always amazing that the same kids that squeal and screech at most bugs and such were very focused on finding creatures and checking them out!

Phoebe wished she had more time to check out this pan:

Afterwards, we hiked back to the building, got washed up and had a picnic lunch before boarding the buses to head back to school.

It was a fun, but quite HOT morning!

Today’s View

April 30, 2010 By: Kini Category: Kids, Misc., Photos, School Comments Off

I took this photo of my lilacs this morning (again while waiting for a bus in the chilly air) with some of the flowers beginning to open.

Doesn’t that look so peaceful?

Today is kind of rough. Alex started to have a sore throat last night and it was worse this morning. She was running a very low grade temp, but since strep is making its rounds out this way right now, I kept her home and took her to the doctor.

Fortunately, no strep. Unfortunately, she’s not feeling terribly well and she has her opening night performance for the musical she’s been working on since February! The show must go on! She’s not horrible, and she is going to try to get through it tonight (by her own choice, no pushing from me!)… only a few hours left until curtain….

Happy Easter!

Wishing everyone a Happy Easter (or Wonderful Sunday) however you plan to spend it.

First up, my girl is back home from her band trip to New York this morning:

Actually, just before I left the house to go wait for the buses to roll in, Phoebe decided she had waited long enough. While the bunny didn’t hide candy filled eggs around the house this year, Phoebe hunted down some HUGE plastic eggs – each with a Littlest Pet Shop creature inside! Then she perused her Easter Basket… then, I left.

After a couple of hours back at home, we all headed over to Ray’s Aunt’s house for an Easter get together. We had an amazingly good time, though it would have been much better had it not been so windy, but I won’t quibble over that.

Happy Easter // Happy Sunday!

Spring Break!

April 01, 2010 By: Kini Category: Family Events, House, Kids, Misc., School Comments Off

The girls’ spring break started officially today after a half day of school.

While Alex is somewhere in Central Park in New York City, I took Phoebe to see How to Train Your Dragon in 3D this afternoon! It was an incredibly great movie! I loved it. She really loved it and wanted to see it again right then. AND – she has plans to OWN it too.

This evening had parent teacher conferences at all of the schools and while we only went determined to see one specific teacher, the shocking thing was more that nearly every time we turned a corner in a hallway at the high school there were kids making out. Yeah, so not ready for that. I doubt I ever will be. After all, my girls are still way too young and innocent for that! I’m know I’m living in an imaginary world sure of that.

After that bit of educational delight (not the conference itself, the other stuff), Phoebe had rehearsal to go to. She did extremely well and is finally starting to reign herself in and down a little and be focused on the task at hand.

Alex even finally called us later too! Her phone had died (silly girl didn’t charge it the night before leaving!) and she had to wait until she could plug it in. She was having an amazing time so far, but was really tired. I cannot imagine why: they rode on buses overnight the whole way to NYC and then jumped right into their day of activities and touring. They didn’t check into their hotel until around 8:00 pm! Poor thing sounded dreadfully exhausted, yet elated to be there. I can’t wait to see her back home, hear her stories about the trip and (hopefully) see a lot of photos and videos!

I admit it. I was feeling antsy that I hadn’t heard from her. Even a text that they made it there would have sufficed for a time. She is my first baby after all. She’ll always be that. Always.

And that’s no April fools…
