Darned Deer
This morning started out in the realm of fairly normal days…for a Thursday…around here.
I walked Phoebe to the end of the driveway to wait for her school bus. Yes, be jealous (if you want), that the little country kids tend to get picked up at their own house rather than a communal bus stop.
The transfer of my child from being by my side to the care of her bus driver went normally — which was just fine.
It was my walk back to the house that caused my sadness for the day.
The first one I noticed was my arborvitae next to our door. It used to be about five feet high, healthy, and gorgeous. Now, it looks like this:
I was am horrified. Then, I began to look around… My other arborvitae that is a little further from the house is in a similar state. Just behind the arborvitae pictured above was a gorgeous barberry bush that was huge and wonderful and blocked the site of our air conditioning compressor is devastated as well.
*sob*
This afternoon when I went outside to meet Phoebe’s bus (if I’m not there, the driver won’t let her off the bus…it’s a rule for the kindergartners), I walked around the back and opposite side of the house. I have a variety of a white spiraea (spiraea nipponica ‘Halward’s Silver’ I believe ) growing beneath the giant lilac hedges trees and they are much smaller in size as well. I didn’t plant these myself like the other objects of deer devastation, but it still is not a good thing.
I am worried that they will start attacking our young dawn redwood. Alex got this tree when she did a service project for Girl Scouts way back when (three years ago or so) and it has grown rather well so far.
I’m going to be spending some quality time with Google tonight.
This is why I’m saddened today. *deep sigh*
One Response to “Darned Deer”

I know. I have too much snow still to see what’s going on but I can tell by the way the snow is splitting that things are not going to be pretty in the spring for many of my trees here too. Sigh.
But I’m getting frost damage. Any idea what’s hitting your shrubs? And what are we going to do about it? Did google help?
