Driving on the Highway
This happened about two weeks ago, but something I saw today reminded me. I was reminded of how shocked and upset it made me at the time.
You know how when you are entering the highway, you have to match speed with those already on the highway and merge in?
Imagine my surprise when a SCHOOL BUS WITH CHILDREN on it was driving on the highway in the right lane. There were a few cars on the entrance ramp going no where near the speed of the highway. The bus driver practically slammed on her brakes to slow the bus to allow the cars on the entrance ramp to get on the highway in front of the bus.
Huh?
This caused the vehicles behind the bus to slam on their brakes and several swerved. This almost caused an accident when a vehicle lurched toward the other lane which was also busy with many vehicles which then veered to the shoulder.
Amazingly, there was not a single fender-bender that occurred then. Now, I realize that there are several other factors going on, such as, whether or not there was enough space between each vehicle. More often than not, on a normal day, there really is not enough space. Today was a “normal” day.
Still, I cannot believe that a bus driver would do that and jeopardize the safety of the kids on that bus. Really, it is up to the vehicles on the entrance ramp to either speed up to merge before a highway vehicle, or slow down and merge in behind.
I hope, seriously, that it was a one-time happening. I hate to believe that this is the standard M.O. of this driver, or any other school bus driver.
What do you think?
