Vision
Back in late October or Early November, Phoebe had a vision screening at her preschool. I’m not sure about everywhere else, but here in Michigan, it is required to have a vision screening prior to entering Kindergarten.
The vision technicians from the County Health Department failed her and referred her for an actual exam. I called the pediatric eye doctor (Alex had seen her several years ago) to make an appointment. The soonest she could get in was in six months. SIX MONTHS! I have to hope that they have space in their schedules for emergencies.
Anyhow, the six month wait was over today. I picked Phoebe up from school and we went home and we had some lunch. She had had a difficult day at school. One of her friends didn’t play with her and for some reason, today, that really upset her.
After lunch, we read a bit and did some other little things before heading over to the eye doctor. Since we had been here before with Alex, Phoebe knew exactly where the children’s waiting room was (you know, movie playing, toys, books, etc…) and went there.
I am happy to say that her vision in fine. In fact, the doctor commented that normally she can figure a good guess as to why a child fails the screenings, but this left her with no clue. We figure either Phoebe or the technician wasn’t having a particularly good day, or there was glare on the screen, or Phoebe just didn’t understand in a timely manner what she needed to do. All in all, she now has a thorough baseline vision exam. Yippee.
Oh, and if you have never seen a 4.5 year-old after having their eyes dilated, it is humorous! Suddenly, while waiting for the drops to work, tells me that things look weird. Then, she stumbled around a bit like a little drunken monkey. Mind you, I have no idea what a drunken monkey would act like, but I imagine this wasn’t far off. Especially since we call her “little monkey” from time to time when she’s in the climbing up and all over everything.
She even wore those little “sunglasses” that you get from the eye doctor after dilation the rest of the day. She is so cute.
