Kindergarten, Here She Comes!
This morning, I took Phoebe up to register her for kindergarten this fall! It was a pretty monumental event in her life. She has been wanting to ride the bus to school ever since–well, forever.
She’s all set, we just need to update a few things after her physical this summer when she turns 5. (My baby is going to be 5!!!)
Although, I have misgivings about it. You see, the district we live in has a wonky, ridiculous schedule for their kindergarten classes.
There are basically three “sections” of kindergarten classes. A, B, and 4-Day:
- The kids in the A group go to school all day every Monday and Thursday and every other Wednesday.
- B group goes all day every Tuesday and Friday and every other Wednesday.
- Then there is a group who attends Monday THROUGH Thursday, all day, every week.
I wonder what “medication” someone was on when they thought this up and why, oh why, would anyone do it this way??? When Alex went to kindergarten, it was a different district, a different county even, but she went every day for half days. Perfect. Her school at that time had a section of full day, every day classes mostly for kids they deemed high risk for academic issues later on (or something like that) and for the kids who would be at after (or before) school kinder-care anyhow. I’m not debating the full day vs. half day issues, though I would prefer half day every day for a kindergartener. We live in a district that is huge in area and pretty rural. It’s a cost to bus issue, and I understand that. It’s the lack of a consistent daily schedule that I have HUGE issues with. COLOSSAL issues.
I so hope she gets into the 4-Day schedule. It’s by a lottery. AND, we won’t know until pretty much the end of August. I’ve indicated that we would go elsewhere if she did not get it. I guess I should really get started on figuring that out, just in case. I considered home school for kindergarten, but I really need that “away” time from her. She is so high maintenance. That I’d like to seek employment, but without having to use day care (because what would be the point then??? My paycheck spent on daycare? So not.)
When your kids went to kindergarten (or when they do go) what kind of schedule does your district follow? Are you happy with it?
